The Boeing VC-25, a military version of the Boeing 747, is operated by the United States Air Force specifically for presidential transport. It is designated "Air Force One" only when the president is aboard. Powered by four General Electric CF6-80C2B1 engines, it can reach a maximum speed of Mach 0.92 and has a range of over 7,000 miles—roughly one-third of the way around the world—without refueling.

Two VC-25 aircraft, completed in 1986 and first flown in 1987, are currently in service. Two new aircraft, based on the Boeing 747-8I, have been ordered by the United States Air Force to replace the aging VC-25As and will eventually assume the "Air Force One" designation.
