The Airline Transport Pilot certificate is the highest grade of FAA pilot certificate and is required to serve as a captain, and in most cases a first officer, for a scheduled airline. It requires a knowledge test, a practical test, and minimum experience, typically 1,500 hours.

Most candidates use a test prep book or an online ground school that works the current FAA ATP question bank, paired with the official knowledge testing supplement used at the test center. Studying in short, regular sessions between trips is the common approach for working pilots.

Commercial pilot training qualifies you to be paid to fly, while ATP training prepares you for airline command with deeper knowledge of high-altitude operations, transport-category systems, and crew procedures. Many pilots build hours at the commercial level before completing ATP requirements.
