First birthed and heatedly inserted into service on 15 March 1942, the 312th Bombardment Squadron was later reclassified as the 312th Bombardment Group (Dive), then the squadron morphed into the 312th Bombardment Group (Light) in December 1943. It flew combat air patrols, shooting from the hip, while throwing knockout punches, and eagerly served as benevolent protective shields of the countless air groups during escort missions, while often in support of other combative units, who may even have been boots on the ground.

This crow, with its gleeful smile, is putting his entire body into the mighty wind-up, to hurl a yellow aerial bomb, using both of its wings, right on top of the dastardly enemy combatants. The tommy gun, grasped in the crow's left foot, is a nod to the friendly ground troops in which the unit supported and protected during their attacks and assaults. All of these design elements are centered upon a gray gun sight, placed over a white circle.

The cloud symbolizes altitude, while the bird itself represents the vigilant hunting and preying dealt upon the enemy as the crow flies. The aerial bomb is in a state of watchful preparedness, firmly backed and bolstered by the grey gun sight, showing how the squadron members are on highest alert.
