Lockheed designed the L-1049 Constellation for one man and one man only- Howard Hughes. In 1939, Hughes bought a majority stake in TWA and sought a new plane to give the company an edge. The two parties agreed that Lockheed couldn't sell the Constellation to anyone else until they had delivered 35 to TWA. The plan worked. Affectionately known as Connie, the 44-passenger L-1049 became an enduring symbol of aviation, the epitome of class and luxury in the golden age of propeller-driven flight.
