Description
To say the B-25B Mitchells that flew in the Doolittle Raids over Tokyo in 1942 were vulnerable would be an understatement. The planes took off from a carrier and flew without fighter escorts. The Navy stripped them of several guns to save weight and make space for extra fuel. Each plane carried two painted dowel rods in the tail cone to simulate machine guns and discourage an attack. The planes survived Japan, but 15 of 16 crashed in China due to low fuel and bad weather. Still, the mission was a success as it boosted American morale and struck fear into the Japanese.
