The Navy stripped them of several guns to save weight and make space for extra fuel. Each plane carried two painted dowel rods in the tail cone to simulate machine guns and discourage an attack. The planes survived Japan, but 15 of 16 crashed in China due to low fuel and bad weather. Still, the mission was a success as it boosted American morale and struck fear into the Japanese.
