Initially deployed to England in 1943 with the P-39 Airacobras they had trained in, the 508th was quickly re-outfitted with the more capable P-47 Thunderbolt. The pilots of the 508th were in action over the beaches of Normandy on June 6, 1944, and were instrumental in enabling Omar Bradley's First Army to break out into the French countryside at Saint-Lo.
