El N-3B original data de la década de 1950, cuando la Fuerza Aérea lo entregó a las tripulaciones aéreas y terrestres que vivían en zonas gélidas. La mayoría de los aviadores la llamaban "parka de snorkel" porque la capucha se puede cerrar muy ajustadamente alrededor de la cara, dejando solo un pequeño círculo para que el usuario mire hacia afuera.

Adecuado para temperaturas bajo cero, el N-3B cuenta con una cubierta de nailon resistente a la intemperie, un cálido forro de poliéster, una capucha recortada en piel con capucha desmontable y cremalleras y cierres resistentes.
