Every aviation illustration undertaken by artist Sam Lyons tells a story, and with Return From Rimini, he recounts an event of epic proportions. In the 16" x 24" image, Lyons relates the occurrences of September 9, 1944, when USAAF Major Robert McCart Hackney led a 48-aircraft bombing run on the city of Rimini, Italy. The central figure in the picture is Cowtown Avenger, Hackney's B-25 Mitchell, and the drawing portrays the Major himself at the controls of the medium bomber. As is characteristic of all of Lyons' creations, the airplane is 100% accurate from tip to tail, and its exterior markings are identical to those on the genuine article. Warbird enthusiasts will appreciate the appearance of two other aircraft from the attack's formation, and all viewers are sure to relish the stunning background imagery; including a vibrant blue sky, crystal coastal water, rolling terrain, and even a light undercast - complete with the B-25's shadow! After a few minutes of soaking it all in, you might even believe you can hear the Mitchell's Wright R-2600 radials humming.
