Description

The Memphis Belle is a Boeing-built B-17F, serial number 41-24485 that was delivered to the US Army Air Force in 1942. Stationed in England during World War II, it flew 25 bombing missions and shot down eight German aircraft. The aircraft was named for the pilot's girlfriend, who lived in Memphis, TN. The aircraft was ordered back to the US to promote war bonds. Interesting fact: After the war it was bought by the city of Memphis. The city did not have the budget to properly display the aircraft and it was transferred to the National Museum of the Air Force at Wright Patterson AFB where it was restored and put on display in the museum in 2018.
