Description

No doubt about it, Sam Lyons' riveting, intensely hued Shellightning is aviation artwork at its best. For starters, the 17½" x 26" illustration's star subject, an extremely rare Lockheed Orion 9C in Shell Aviation livery, sports an engrossing red & yellow paint job that is truly a wonder to behold. Then there's its historical aspect: The featured airplane once belonged to none other than General James Harold "Jimmy" Doolittle, who purchased the aircraft when he became vice president of the Aviation Department of Shell Oil Company. Doolittle frequently flew the Orion to air races around the nation to promote the company's new 100-octane aviation gasoline. Rounding out the picture's top-of-the-line trifecta is the remarkable degree of realism in the background imagery. Everything from the weathered hangars to the uneven, weed-covered ramp to the partly cloudy sky is identical to what you might see at an actual airfield. All combined, these elements deliver a magnificent display one is not soon to forget.

This item is available as both an Artist Proof (limited to 25) and a signed & numbered Limited Edition print (limited to 600). Both versions are printed on acid-free paper, utilize first-rate permanent inks, and include a Certificate of Authenticity. Also offered as a Gallery Edition Canvas Giclee with frame (limited to 25).
