Steady boys! The men of the 586th Bombardment Squadron gripped harder upon the handles of their flight control inputs aboard the B-26 Marauder medium bomber. Their offensive missions were to fly world-class bombardier service, especially catered for the European Theater of Operations. Sorties often tested the limits of crew mentality. The lethality of bombing runs was fraught with enemy fighters that seemed to jink and jive away from onboard gun turrets, dropped bombs that didn't hit the target, and mechanical malfunctions plagued the entire mission to the point of aborting. Yet our courageous crews forged forward.
The Marauders of the 586th knew what to do when flight mission conditions turned sour. With clenched jaws, they found alternatives in the heat of the moment. Based on their training, contingencies such as dealing with low cloudy ceilings were overcome by flying by the seat of their pants. Coming so close to the ground cover or water line that wing vortices kicked up wet sprays, or flung leaves and branches about the area.
The unit patch of the 586th Bombardment Squadron is of a most ornery donkey sporting a top hat, garishly worn on his head at a rakish angle. This marauding mule is captured in a pose that illustrates its popular, well-known singular purpose in life. And that is, the dangerous donkey seems to be donkey-drop-kicking a fused bomb with his hind legs. In the background is a tall isosceles triangle, green in color, outlined by a thin black border.
