Some fighter squadrons during WWII adjusted their primary mission as the war progressed, even changing the type of aircraft that they flew. The U.S. Army Air Corps 487th Fighter Squadron was one of those highly flexible units. From September of 1943 and into 1944, the 487th flew the P-47 Thunderbolt on bomber escort missions over Nazi-occupied Europe. Shortly after D-Day, the 487th Fighter Squadron was re-equipped with longer range P-51 Mustangs. They supported the Allied advance through France and Belgium, helping to avert disaster at the Battle of the Bulge. The 487th later returned to England, where they flew long-range bomber escort missions for the remainder of the war.

The pilots of the 487th fighter squadron were heroic, and the Aeroplane Apparel Company is proud to display their emblem on this t-shirt. Superimposed on a lightning bolt, a well-armed baby bearing a determined glare stands ready for action. This childlike representation was selected on purpose. The baby represented the youth of the squadrons pilots as well as their determination to complete their mission. This is no kid to mess around with, either; under his left arm, the baby bears a fully loaded machine gun. In his right hand is a riding crop held aloft, ready to whip anyone who dares to tangle with him. Whether the enemy was in the air or hiding amongst the trees, the men of the 487th were prepared to defeat them.
