Description

The EC-135 is a command and control version of the C-135 Stratolifter. The C-135 is a transport aircraft derived from the B367-80 jet airliner prototype in the early 1950s. The C-135 was modified for the "Looking Glass" program, and renamed the EC-135. The Looking Glass program was started during the Cold War, by the Strategic Air Command (SAC). The first Looking Glass mission was in February 1961. Looking Glass aircraft were continuously airborne 24 hours a day for over 29 years, accumulating more than 281,000 accident-free flying hours. In July 1990, Looking Glass ceased continuous airborne alert, but remained on ground or airborne alert 24 hours a day. In October 1998, the Navy's E-6 Mercury TACAMO replaced the EC-135C in the Looking Glass mission.
