Description

Celebrate the arrival of the warm weather flying season - regardless of what the calendar says - with Sam Lyons' sensational summery Laird Super Solution Air Racer. The vibrant 16" x 20" illustration depicts one of the lesser-well-known raceplanes from the glory days of the 1930s, the one-of-a-kind Super Solution designed & built by E.M. "Matty" Laird. Shortly after its completion in the summer of 1931, the distinctive racing biplane won the first Bendix Trophy air race, piloted by none other than famed WWII hero James H. "Jimmy" Doolittle. Those familiar with the speed demon will relish Lyons' ultra-precise portrayal of the aircraft's unique attributes. Everything from its main wheel fairings to the tight cowling over its Pratt & Whitney "Wasp Jr." R-985 radial to the angle & curvature of its airfoils is amazingly identical to the production airplane. Even non-pilots will enjoy the "Sky Buzzard's" colorful charisma, which can be described as a John Deere tractor meets the Brazilian flag meets a four-wing Gee Bee Racer. The artist's realistic rendering of the image's grass and the wild blue yonder further augment the sensation of springtime.

This picture is available as both an Artist Proof (limited to 10) and a signed & numbered Limited Edition print (limited to 100). Both versions are printed on acid-free paper, utilize first-rate permanent inks, and include a Certificate of Authenticity. A terrific tribute to an ahead-of-its-time aeronautical masterpiece that will have aviators everywhere anxiously awaiting their next trip to the airport.
