This collectable model Petlyakov PE-2 represents one of the most important ground-attack aircraft of World War II, a veteran of reconnaissance, attack and fighter mission. This 1/32-scale model Petlyakov PE-2 makes a great pilot gift, or a present for any veteran, aviation enthusiast or history buff.
The Petlyakov PE-2 was one of the most-produced attack aircraft of World War II, and continued in service with Eastern Bloc countries until 1954. Powered by two Klimov M-105PF engines of 1,210 horsepower each, the Petlyakov PE-2 had a maximum speed of 360 mph and could carry up to 3,500 pounds of bombs.
Designed by Vladimir Petlyakov in a Soviet prison camp in the late 1930s, Petlyakov was put in charge of a team to develop a high-altitude fighter escort for the ANT-42 under the designation VI-100. The first of two prototypes flew on Dec. 22, 1939 and was a very sophisticated aircraft for its time, featuring a pressurized cabin, all-metal construction, superchargers and many electrically-actuated systems. The prototypes proved so pleasing that production was ordered almost immediately.
The Petlyakov PE-2 proved highly accurate as a bomber, as was fast enough to elude German interceptors. More than 11,000 of these aircraft were produced, the last leaving service with the Yugoslavian Air Force in 1954.
