This collectable model Curtiss P-6E represents one of the most beautiful biplanes ever built, a between-wars model that served until 1937. Painstakingly built from Philippine mahogany by our skilled craftsmen, this 1/20-scale model P-6E Hawk makes a great pilot gift or a present for any veteran, aviation enthusiast or history buff.

Development of the P-6 began in the late 1920s, an outgrowth of the Curtiss P-1. Fitted with a 700-horsepower V-12 engine, the P-6 was one of the fastest aircraft of the day, with a prototype XP-6 taking first place in the 1927 National Air Races, hitting 201 mph.

Despite its excellent performance, only 46 P-6E's were ordered because of the shortage of funds for the Air Corps during the austere days of the depression.

P-6E Hawks served between 1932 and 1937 with the 17th and 19th Pursuit Squadrons at Selfridge Field, Mich. and with the 33rd Pursuit Squadron at Langley Field, Virginia. Numerous accidents claimed at least 27 of the 46 aircraft delivered. As the P-6Es became obsolete, instead of receiving depot overhauls, they were allowed to wear out in service and were scrapped or sold. At least one survived into 1942 in United States Army Air Forces service.

One one P-6 survives, owned by the National Air & Space Museum and on loan to the National Museum of the United States Air Force.
