This collectable model P-39 Airacobra represents a fighter that saw its greatest contributions come when flying for another country. The P-39, with its unusual configuration of having the engine behind the pilot, was outclassed as an air-to-air combatant, but proved to be a deadly ground attack aircraft in the hands of Soviet pilots. This 1/32-scale model P-39 Airacobra makes a great pilot gift or a present for any veteran, aviation enthusiast or history buff.
The P-39 Airacobra, with the P-40 Warhawk, was the United States' front-line fighter at the start of World War II. With its engine mounted behind the pilot, the aircraft carried a 37mm cannon firing through the prop hub.
Though a good performer at low level, the lack of a turbocharger in production versions hampered its high-altitude abilities. The engine's location near the aircraft's center of gravity also made it a handful for less-experienced pilots.
The P-30 Airacobra saw service in all theaters with U.S. Forces, although it was soon replaced by more modern designs.
With more than 9,000 aircraft produced, the Airacobra saw combat worldwide in World War II. It proved to be an effective attack aircraft for Soviet forces, and performed well in the low-altitude aerial combat in that theater.
