The collectable model Nancy NC-4 represents the first aircraft to fly across the Atlantic, and one of the largest biplanes ever built. Painstakingly built from Philippine mahogany by our skilled craftsmen with a wealth of detail, this scale-model Nancy NC-4 makes a great gift for any aviation enthusiast or history buff.

Built in 1918 as a long-range aircraft for anti-submarine patrol, the Curtiss NC series were among the largest biplanes ever built. Powered by four Liberty V-12 engines, the NC series had a wingspan of 126 feet and was 68 feet long, large enough to include sleeping quarters for its crew of six.

The NC-4 made its first flight in April 1919.

On May 18, 1919, the Navy set out to make the first trans-Atlantic flight using the NC-1, NC-3 and NC-4, with future admiral Marc Mitscher in command of the mission. Using Navy warships placed at 50-mile intervals as beacons, the aircraft crossed from Newfoundland to the Azores on May 16. The NC-1 and NC-3 were forced to land at sea, but the NC-4 made it to Horta after a 15-hour flight.

After 10 days, the NC-4 reached Lisbon, with a total flight time of 26 hours, 46 minutes. Less than a month later, a Vickers Vimy flew from Newfoundland to Ireland non-stop, eclipsing the flight of the NC-4.

The NC-4 survives, and is on display at the Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola, Fla.
