The collectable model Grumman HU-16E Albatross represents a twin-engine open sea rescue craft that was used by the U.S. Coast Guard, Navy and Air Force. Painstakingly built from Philippine mahogany by our skilled craftsmen with a wealth of detail, this 1/30 scale model HU-16E Albatross makes a great gift for any aviation enthusiast or history buff.
An improvement on the Grumman Mallard, the HU-16 first few in 1949, with service deliveries beginning in 1949. As the Air Force SA-16, it was extensive use in Korea as an air/sea rescue craft.
Powered by two Wright R-1820 Cyclone engines, the HU-16 had a range of more than 2,800 miles. It was able to land in seas of up to four feet, and could land in heavier sea conditions when equipped with JATO rockets.
The HU-16E variant was used by the U.S. Coast Guard and featured a longer wing. The Coast Guard used the HU-16 until it was finally replaced by the HU-25 Guardian and HC-130 Hercules.
