Description

Very few fans of golden age aircraft racing aren't familiar with the in-a-class-all-its-own legend of the era that is the Gee Bee Z Air Racer. Built by well-known raceplane manufacturers the Granville Brothers, the Model Z dominated the racing circuit during its brief reign in late 1931. Unfortunately, the aircraft crashed on December 5, 1931, killing pilot Lowell Bayless and ending its albeit short-lived dynasty. In Gee Bee Z Air Racer, artistic savant Sam Lyons treats viewers to a profile view of the iconic taildragger in all its glory. The 16" x 20" illustration portrays the singular superstar parked on a field of vibrant green, the wild blue yonder looming large in the backdrop. Those well-versed in the Gee Bee Zee will relish Lyons' spot-on rendition of the speed demon, with everything from its wire bracing to its sleek lines to the cowling covering its Pratt & Whitney R-985 "Wasp Jr." radial identical to that on the genuine article. Additionally, all aviation art enthusiasts will delight in the airplane's unique yellow & black paint scheme - talk about flight of the bumblebee!

This picture is available as both an Artist Proof (limited to 10) and a signed & numbered Limited Edition print (limited to 100).
