This collectable model F8F-1 Bearcat represents the ultimate version of Grumman's piston-engine fighter development during World War II. The Bearcat – in a later civilian racing version – became the fastest piston-engine aircraft in history. This 1/24-scale model F8F-1 Bearcat makes a great pilot gift, or a present for any veteran, aviation enthusiast or history buff.
The Bearcat followed the other Grumman cats of World War II – the F4F Wildcat and F6F Hellcat. By adding the largest available engine – the R-2800 Double Wasp of 2,250 horsepower – to the smallest and lightest airframe Grumman engineers could devise, the Bearcat showed dazzling performance. Top speed was 455 mph, and in 1946 set a time to climb record of 94 seconds to 10,000 feet, a record that held for 10 years.
Although squadron deliveries began in 1945, the Bearcat arrived too late to see combat in World War II, and never saw action with U.S. forces. However, the Bearcat saw use with French forces in Vietnam, and with the Vietnamese Air Force.
The Bearcat's speed and maneuverability made it the first aircraft used by the Blue Angels, the navy's flight demonstration team.
A highly modified Bearcat became Rare Bear, one of the most successful air racers in history.
