SAVE $8,000 ON AN IFR RATING
I gained my instrument rating in the minimum 35 hrs of actual flight training, after sitting in front of ELITE for 44 hrs. To be able to practice 8 instrument approaches per hour, in all sorts of really bad weather, (On ELITE), beats paying $200/hr for a training plane and having to waste time flying outbound segments to be set up for a new approach.

Not eye-candy but great for IFR
The scenery is crude, the choice of aircraft is quite limited, BUT the flight dynamics and navigation functions are very realistic. I bought Elite when it was a Mac program in the late 80's and cost nearly $1000! I've followed the upgrades and now have version 8.5 PCATD - good for logging time. I use it for instructing my IFR students.
Unlike FS-X, you don't need a specially fast computer. A 2+ GHz CPU and an Nvidia video card will max out the frame rate.
ASA's On Top is a worthy competitor. I have them both, but prefer Elite.
