Description

The C-990 Coronado was a narrow-body jet airliner produced by the Convair division of General Dynamics. The C-990 design was based on Convair's earlier C-880, the C-990 was a "stretched" version and was produced in response to a request from American Airlines. American Airlines requested that Convair design an aircraft for coast-to-coast flights, able to fly nonstop New York to Los Angeles against westerly winds. The 990 entered production in 1961. Unfortunately, American Airlines timetables show little or no difference in scheduled time between Boeing 707 and C-990 flights; and as a result AA began to dispose of its C-990s in 1967. When AA and other major airlines retired their Convair 990s, they found a second life operating for charter airlines. Spantax of Spain had a large fleet until they were gradually retired in the mid 1980s.

This specific model is painted in the American Airlines paint scheme. American Airlines is a major U.S. airline headquartered in Fort Worth, Texas. American Airlines operates an extensive international and domestic network, with scheduled flights throughout North America, the Caribbean, South America, Europe, and Asia/Pacific.
