This collectable model represents the C-2 Greyhound, the basic cargo aircraft operating from the U.S. Navy's aircraft carriers. A variant of the E-2 Hawkeye, the Greyhound has served in the carrier onboard delivery role since 1965. Painstakingly built from Philippine mahogany by skilled craftsmen using a wealth of detail, this 1/48-scale model C-2 Greyhound makes a great gift for any aviation enthusiast or history buff.
The C-2 – based on the E-2 Hawkeye early warning aircraft - can deliver up to 10,000 pounds of cargo with a range of 1,500 miles, with a cruise speed of 289 mph. It can also carry litter patients in medical evacuation missions. The large aft cargo ramp and door and a powered winch allow straight-in rear cargo loading and unloading for fast turnaround. Its ability to airdrop supplies and personnel, fold its wings, and generate power for engine starting and other uses provide an operational versatility found in no other cargo aircraft.
Due to aircraft carrier hangar deck height restrictions, the C-2 features an unusual quadruple rudder tail assembly. For adequate directional control of an aircraft of its size, a single rudder would have been too tall. The quadruple rudder also places the outboard rudder surfaces in line with the propeller wash, providing effective yaw control even as the C-2's airspeed approaches zero, as during takeoff and landing.
The C-2 remains in service with the U.S. Navy, undergoing a service life extension program.
