The Traffic Module of the ElectronicFlight library details the operation of a Traffic Advisory System (TCAS I/TAS). The overall operation and intruder priority levels are explained before progressing into the specifics of the Bendix/King KTA 870, KMH 880, Goodrich SkyWatch and SkyWatch HP systems.

The self-guided computer-based training then highlights the operation of the TCAS I/TAS systems on the Avidyne FlightMax, Honeywell KMD-550/850 and Garmin display systems. The history and development of TCAS systems and their transition into the general aviation systems of today are explained.

The ElectronicFlight program details intruder symbology, audio alert priorities, limitations of antenna shading, differences between the various TCAS systems, operation modes, alert inhibits, intruder tracking methodology and sensitivity levels.

At the very core of the self-paced of the training program is the ElectronicFlight CompleteLearning Methodology that focuses on the following basic elements:

  • Instill conceptual knowledge, instead of rote memorization
  • Implant mental models (a picture imprinted into permanent memory)
  • Present the conceptual organization of a system
  • Provide requisite knowledge using highly graphical methods
  • Reinforce knowledge with targeted practice exercises
  • Implement hands-on skill development with a knowledgeable Flight Instructor

After successful completion of a module, the operation, and familiarity, of a piece of avionics should become second nature when it counts the most under the pressure of high-workload situations in the cockpit.

Upon successful completion of this CompleteLearning module the student will be able to:

  • Discriminate between the different types of TCAS
  • Cite the mandates of TCAS rulings
  • Describe the method of intruder tracking methodology
  • Recount the limitations of current traffic awareness technology
  • Discriminate between the different transponder systems and capabilities
  • List the four types of intruder symbology and their priority levels
  • Recall a mental image of TCAS symbology
  • Describe the two sensitivity levels and their priority
  • Recall the altitude switching, and lockouts, of the sensitivity levels
  • Describe the tracking of a constant bearing intruder
  • Verbalize a typical TCAS encounter to ATC
  • Incorporate TCAS limitations into decision strategies
  • Describe the inputs and outputs to a typical TAS system
  • Recount the antenna signal patterns
  • Recollect the different modes of each TAS system
  • Demonstrate the action of changing ranges on a TCAS display
  • Explain the different modes of a Multi-function Display
  • Determine the severity of an intruder alert, and required action, and much more.

Minimum Hardware Requirements: PC compatible, 64MB of RAM, 266MHz Processor, Sound Card, Windows 95 or higher, Approximately 100MB of hard disk space per module. Not MAC OS compatible.
