This is the boisterous, wildly exaggerated but true tale of Dick Starks, a Kansas City math teacher who goes through the agonies and delights of learning to fly under the guidance of an old veteran CFI and A&P named Virgil, buys a down-in-the-tires Cessna 120 and learns about the tribulations of aircraft ownership the hard way.
Dick then gets bitten by the homebuilding bug and goes on to build and fly a replica of a WWI Nieuport 11 fighter plane. He becomes part of the "Dawn Patrol", a group of airborne lunatics who fly out of a tiny strip and are constantly challenging one another to strange types of aerial combat.

Dick Starks started writing about flying as a lark, approaching this pursuit with his usual eagerness and zeal. His work has appeared in such magazines as KITPLANES, The EAA Experimenter, and Homebuilt Aircraft.
