Writings on thunderstorm research always conclude with an admonition to stay out of storms but staying out takes more than a resolve. It takes savvy. Richard Collins' new edition of his book, Thunderstorms and airplanes, provides in-depth understanding of why, when, and where these weather hazards are likely to develop and gives practical advice on flying clear of them.
Weather forecasters often include the "chance" of thunderstorms to cover every eventuality - not probability -which leaves pilots virtually on their own to decide whether or not thunder- storms will be a consideration for the flight. Only the view from the front seat and the knowledge of what makes thunderstorms can equip pilots to make good decisions that lead to a safe flight.
In this book, weather theory is converted to practical application. The dynamics of thunderstorms, wind shear, and other related phenomena are described as readers are guided through a systematic pre-takeoff weather briefing. All available weather data are correlated to forecast storm location and severity, to help the reader arrive at a sound go/no-go decision. Collins explains what happens when machine meets Mother Nature, with sound advice on how to handle such an in-flight meeting.
Chapters cover weather basics, thunderstorm research, storm forecasting, "pilot or controller: who is responsible," accidents related to thunderstorms, and more. Soft cover, illustrated, indexed, 192 pages.
